    Welcome to Nijmegen,
the oldest city of The Netherlands!

Back in the year 98 AC, under the Roman Empire, the city of Nijmegen was named Ulpia Noviomagus Batavorum and became the first city in The Netherlands to receive the Roman city rights.

The name Noviomagus is derived from the Latinized Celtic placename meaning "new market".
